City of Humboldt

Where Prairie Spirit Meets German Legacy. The City of Humboldt was named after the renowned German scientist and naturalist Baron Alexander von Humboldt. The name “Humboldt” was officially approved in 1875.
The community’s early development was shaped by the founding of St. Peter’s Colony, established by Benedictine monks. In 1903, the German American Land Company sold parcels of former railroad land to settlers seeking more than the standard quarter section, offering a bigger slice of prairie life.
Enjoy a trip to Humboldt and experience its German‑inspired main street, rich museum and churches, vibrant gallery, the one‑of‑a‑kind water tower, and the original Humboldt settlement site.
