Most experts credit German-American immigrant Charles Feltman, born Carl Feldmann in Lower Saxony, with creating the hot dog at Coney Island in 1867. By serving frankfurters in long buns, he made them easy to eat on the go, turning a German sausage tradition into one of North America’s most iconic summer foods.
