In 2026, Canada and Germany mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Formal bilateral relations began on July 10, 1951, when Canada upgraded its mission in Bonn to a full embassy and accredited Thomas Clayton Davis as its first ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. Germany opened its embassy in Ottawa on November 8 of the same year.
Since then, Canada and Germany have developed a close partnership grounded in shared democratic values, strong cultural connections, trade, research, innovation, and international cooperation.
The relationship is also strengthened by close connections between people in both countries. Almost three million Canadians report having at least some German ancestry, and thousands of young Canadians and Germans participate in educational, research, and work opportunities in each other’s countries.
