October German Heritage Month

In December 2016, the Canadian Parliament officially declared October “German Heritage Month” in order to “recognize the contributions that German-Canadians have made to Canadian society, the richness of the German language and culture, and the importance of educating and reflecting upon German heritage for future generations, and that the Waterloo Region is host to the largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany, by declaring October, every year, German Heritage Month, and the nine days commencing the Friday before Thanksgiving, every year, Oktoberfest”.

Although Covid-19 is limiting in-person events this year, the Town of Assiniboia will fly the German flag from October 1-8 to commemorate German Heritage Month. This wonderful recognition is an opportunity to promote our rich culture & traditions and contribute to multiculturalism in this province.
