Blumenfeld Church

Blumenfeld Church

Saints Peter and Paul Church, also called Blumenfeld Church or Blumenfeld Roman Catholic Church holds heritage value for its ties to German-Russian pioneers in the Prelate district and its central role in community religious and social life. Established in 1912, the German-Catholic homesteaders were served by Oblate missionaries from Lethbridge. The current Saints Peter and Paul Church, built in 1915, became a spiritual hub and “Mother Church” for nearby parishes.

A fieldstone shrine Our Lady of the Sorrows added in 1936 made it a pilgrimage site. Though regular services ended in 1962, the church still hosts occasional events, and the cemetery and annual pilgrimages remain active. Locals view the site as a symbol of generational continuity and a tribute to early settlers.

Iron Crosses

Additional heritage value lies in the wrought iron crosses that mark some graves in the cemetery, showcasing traditional folk art brought by German-Russian immigrants.
